Weight gain associated with antipsychotic medication can be a barrier to the overall improvement
of mental health patients due to a discontinuation of treatment. The goal of this article is to establish a
better understanding regarding the mechanisms of antipsychotic medications and their associated risk
of weight gain, obesity, and subsequent mortality and morbidity. Additionally, the need to closely
monitor patients’ lifestyles and homeostatic components in order to prevent weight gain or facilitate
weight loss is emphasized.
