Autism emerged as a recognized pediatric neuropsychiatric disorder in 1943 with the publication of Leo Kanner’s article entitled “Autistic Disturbances of Affective Contact” in a journal called Nervous Child. Kanner was the first Director of the Children’s Psychiatric Service at Johns Hopkins under Adolf Meyer, and he lived until 1981 to see the “Kanner syndrome” gain worldwide attention. His initial article described 8 boys and 3 girls who were unable to relate well to other people and exhibited speech that was delayed and monotonous compared to that of their peers.
