Recent epidemiologic studies suggest that autismspectrum disorders (ASD) are far more prevalent than formerly believed; whereasbroader definition and better ascertainment may partly be responsible, higherincidence is also a potential explanation. Therefore, given that ASD may haveenvironmental as well as genetic roots, environmental causes need to beexplored. Might maternal mental health and use of psychotropics during pregnancycontribute to the environmentally mediated risk? These possibilities wereconsidered in 2 recent studies.
