Autism emerged as a recognized pediatric neuropsychiatricdisorder in 1943 with the publication of Leo Kanner’s articleentitled "Autistic Disturbances of Affective Contact" in a journalcalled Nervous Child. Kanner was the first Director of theChildren’s Psychiatric Service at Johns Hopkins under AdolfMeyer, and he lived until 1981 to see the "Kanner syndrome"gain worldwide attention. His initial article described 8 boysand 3 girls who were unable to relate well to other people andexhibited speech that was delayed and monotonous compared tothat of their peers. ‘ ‹
