Rates of nonadherence to antipsychotics are high and are associated with increased risk of relapse and hospitalization. Long-acting injectable antipsychotics relieve patients from the daily need to take medication and have the potential to improve adherence. The current article reports the results of a 1 year study with schizophrenia patients who received treatment with a long-acting formulation of the antipsychotic aripiprazole. Patients enrolled in the trial were first switched from their current medication to oral aripiprazole, if they were not already taking it, and then they were switched to long-acting aripiprazole for up to a year.
