Some of the materials on this Web site are
presented in portable
document format (PDF), RealAudio, Flash ,
Shockwave, Windows Media,
and Quicktime format. This
page will help you learn about these media and how to
best access them.
Portable
Document Format
To
read a PDF: You read PDF documents
with Adobe Acrobat Reader. Acrobat Reader is both a
stand-alone program and a plugin for your browser.
Installed as a plugin, Acrobat Reader allows a
seamless transition between an HTML document and a
PDF. If you have not already installed Acrobat
Reader, you may download it for free by clicking the
button below. Before you install Acrobat Reader, you
may want to bookmark the page you were on before you
came here so you can return to it after you have
installed the program.
An
Electronic Version of the Original Document:
A PDF presents an electronic document that very
closely resembles the document as it was printed. For
example, articles from the Journal presented
as PDFs will appear with the same fonts and layout as
they did in the printed version. Because a PDF
contains all the necessary font information, you do
not even need to have the fonts on your system for
the PDF to display properly.
Ease
of Printing: In addition, you may
print a PDF to any laser or ink-jet printer and
obtain a paper copy similar to that published in the Journal.
Please remember, however, that all PDFs are
copyrighted. You may print a copy of an article for
your personal use, but printing multiple copies
without our express permission is prohibited.
Ease
of Searching: Another advantage of
PDFs is that you can quickly find the information you
are looking for, either through a search on a word or
through an electronic table of contents. When you are
in a PDF, you can access the word search by clicking
on the Binoculars icon in the Acrobat toolbar, typing
the word you wish to find, and clicking the FIND
button. In addition, we create a custom set of
bookmarks for each PDF document that allows you to
quickly jump to the articles you are interested in.
You may show and hide this list of bookmarks by
clicking the "Show/hide navigation pane"
button on the navigation bar. In most PDFs, we also
have placed hyperlinks on the table of contents to
allow you even more flexibility in finding the
article you want.

RealAudio Format
To
listen to a RealAudio presentation:
You listen to RealAudio presentations using
RealNetworks RealPlayer. If you have not already
installed RealPlayer, you may download it for free by
clicking the button below. You may want to bookmark
the page you were on before you came here so you can
return to it after you have installed the program.
Real Networks offers two versions of its player, one
for which they charge a fee and one which is free.
The free player is all you need to listen to online
RealAudio presentations. When you go to the
RealNetworks site, you should know that the link to
download the free player is very small and hard to
notice on first inspection, but keep looking, it is
on the page. Note: If you have a previous version of
RealPlayer, you may not need to download the latest
version of RealPlayer to listen to our RealAudio
presentations.
A
Compact File: RealAudio files are
small for easy transmission over the Internet. We
usually offer our presentations in two formats: low
quality and high quality. The low quality file
sacrifices a small amount of audio fidelity in favor
of a shorter download time suitable for slower
Internet connections. The high quality format allows
for more fidelity, but is larger, and more suitable
for faster Internet connections.

Flash
Format
Streaming Animation Easily
Transmitted: You view the streaming
animations on our Web site using Macromedia's Flash
Player. This is a plugin that integrates with your
browser to provide you with seamless viewing of Flash
content. Flash format allows you to easily see
interactive animated presentations on the web. Note
that our presentations are in Flash 5 format, and if
you have an earlier version of the Flash Player, you
will need to upgrade your plugin. Use the link below
to retrieve the necessary files and learn how to
install the Flash Player plugin in your browser.

Shockwave
Format
Advanced Streaming
Animation: The requirements of some
presentation call for something a little more.
Macromedia's Shockwave Player takes another step
beyond Flash to provide added capabilities with video
and 3D animation. The link below will take you to
Macromedia's website to download this free plugin to
expand your web experience.

Windows Media
Format
Streaming Animation and
Sound in a Popular Format: We present
some sound and animation files on our Web site using
Windows Media Format in addition to Flash 5 and
RealAudio formats. The Windows Media Player is a
plugin that integrates with your browser to provide
you with seamless viewing of Windows Media content.
Use the link below to retrieve the necessary files
and learn how to install the Flash Player plugin in
your browser.

Quicktime
Format
Internet Standard Video:
Apple provides this free plugin and program for users
of both Windows and Macintosh computers. It allows
viewing of several video formats. Most videos on our
site require that you at least have Quicktime Version
4. Click the link below to download Quicktime 5 from
the Apple website.
