Excessive daytime sleepiness is increasingly being recognized as a symptom with great impact on patients and their families. Those of us in primary care can help our patients by recognizing its unusual as well as common sources. About 1 patient in each physician’s practice is affected by narcolepsy, and this supplement provides an excellent, clinically practical overview of the scientific tour de force that has rapidly advanced our understanding of narcolepsy, its diagnosis, and effective treatments. The supplement will provide an excellent basis for clinicians’ involvement in the care of those with narcolepsy and consideration of the possibility of narcolepsy in others with excessive daytime sleepiness.
