Real progress in medicine is based upon obtaining new knowledge that provides clear guidance as to how to prevent or treat serious clinical problems. However, obtaining that knowledge, in itself, is insufficient. Unless patients, clinicians, and those who fund, authorize, and oversee the delivery of services utilize the knowledge, its acquisition may have little significance, except, perhaps, as a base for further research.​​​
