Dr. Gelenberg: Smoking is an important concern for psychiatrists and their patients. Data show that about 1 person in 5 in the general population smokes or uses tobacco products1 and that smoking is the leading cause of preventable death in the United States.2 Patients with mental illness have a higher rate of smoking than the base population3 and smoke twice as many cigarettes as smokers without mental illness.4​​
