Article Abstract

Because this piece does not have an abstract, we have provided for your benefit the first 3 sentences of the full text.

The demographics of our society, specifically the aging population and the prevalenceof depression in that population, mean that every psychiatrist will increasingly be called upon to diagnose and treat late-life depression. The consequences ofnot treating this illness are profound. Untreated depression results in an increased mortalityrate because of suicide and an increased death rate in comorbid medical conditionssuch as ischemic heart disease.
