Sir: The article by Zajecka et al.1 on the efficacy and safety of divalproex sodium versus olanzapine in the treatment of bipolar disorder is interesting, but unfortunately it does not seem to truly support the authors’ conclusions. The first problem is sample size. According to previous experience with divalproex2 and olanzapine,3 this study was not clearly powered to show superiority of either drug over the other and it is unclear whether this trial was designed to prove either superiority or noninferiority.
