Michael E. Thase, MD, defined the clinical remission of a depressive episode as a complete relief of the signs and symptoms of the presenting episode. 1 The individual should also return to his or her normal level of social and functional capacity. 

The Sequenced Treatment Alternatives to Relieve Depression (STAR*D) study of 2,876 patients found that nearly 80% of patients had chronic or recurrent depression.2
