Maurice M. Ohayon, M.D., D.Sc., Ph.D., began by stating that physical symptoms are often present in patients with depression, but that the paindepression interaction is not fully understood. Physical pain, although not stated as a symptom of depression according to the DSM-IV classification of major depressive disorder (MDD), is frequently reported by patients with depression.
