Article Abstract

Letter to the Editor

Sir: Because atypical antipsychotic agents are being increasingly prescribed as first-line agents in the treatment of psychotic symptoms, concern about treatment-emergent weight gain and hyperglycemia has increased. A MEDLINE search from 1995 to 2001 using the keywords hyperglycemia, risperidone, diabetes, olanzapine, quetiapine, and clozapine revealed several reports of hyperglycemia associated with clozapine and olanzapine, but only 2 reports of risperidone-associated hyperglycemia. Diabetes mellitus was an infrequently observed (0.1%-1%) event during premarketing evaluation of risperidone.
