Major depression is a common disorder and substantial cause of disease burden worldwide. Nearly 60% of patients with depression may not achieve adequate response following antidepressant treatment. New somatic treatments that are less invasive than electroconvulsive therapy (ECT), such as transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), are being added to the repertoire of treatments that have the potential to be effective in depression that is resistant to pharmacologic therapies.
