Sir: In their recent (January 2005) article,1 Kelly and Conleyreport on a relatively underappreciated side effect of certainatypical antipsychotics. Although effects of certain psychotropics,such as lithium, on thyroid hormones have been extensivelystudied, the effects of atypical antipsychotics meritfurther attention. In patients with preexisting mental illness,drug-induced impairments in thyroid function may exacerbatetheir symptoms and significantly complicate their diagnosis andmanagement.2‘ ‹
