Article Abstract

Because this piece does not have an abstract, we have provided for your benefit the first 3 sentences of the full text.

Depressive illness is common in the general population and is associatedwith significant morbidity, mortality, and societal costs. Although specific pharmacologic and psychotherapeutic interventions have been found to be effective in treating major depression, only a minority of individuals with depression currently receive such treatments; this undertreatment is due in part to lack of recognition and diagnosis of depression and in part to provision of inadequate treatment even when depression is correctly diagnosed.
