In this NHANES analysis of 16,257 adults aged 50 years and older, higher depressive symptom frequency was associated with higher prevalence of coronary heart disease, angina, myocardial infarction, and congestive heart failure. For example, CHD prevalence increased from 7.3% in participants reporting symptoms "not at all" to 10.6% with symptoms on "several days," 10.9% with symptoms on "more than half the days," and 18.2% with symptoms "nearly every day"; all trend tests across symptom-frequency categories were statistically significant (P < .001).
