Any ethical and conscientious medical practitioner recognizes that education cannot cease when one has successfully completed a training program. All physicians are obliged to their patients to continue lifelong learning throughout their careers. However, until 1994, certification by all American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) member boards was a 1-time event that lasted the lifetime of one’s practice. ​
