Sir: Can a single episode of sexual abuse in childhood cause psychiatric problems at a later point in life? Childhood sexual abuse is one of the major risk factors for psychiatric conditions and for numerous physical symptoms in adolescence and adulthood. 1 In most cases, symptoms occur within the first several months after childhood sexual abuse and last for a long time.2
